UltraViolet Archive
UltraViolet Archive (2018-2025) is a nomadic collection of endangered creative works—including films, music, literature, and visual arts—that were banned, challenged, or physically attacked. The installation includes a neon sign, bookshelves, tables, and chairs where visitors engage with the collection. Iterations of this work incorporate a film screening room, research station, and Augmented Reality components enabling the public to access relevant news articles on their mobile devices.
Named after the wavelengths of light outside the visible spectrum, the material within this archive has faced the threat of public invisibility due to a range of challenges, including removal from public libraries, book pulping, or canceling of exhibitions. By creating a physical space to call attention to censorship, I invite the audience to critically examine the structures that hold and reinforce power.
The 2024-2025 Faculty Fellowship through Social Practice CUNY is currently supporting the development of an Augmented Reality component to the UltraViolet Archive installation. The National Coalition Against Censorship is co-sponsoring the event presentation.
