The food project employs mutual aid principles to distribute local produce in a way that builds connections and relationships across our neighborhood’s immigrant communities\, language differences\, and economic situations. \nThe SPCUNY grant supports a community cookbook project that showcases neighbors’ recipes in English\, Spanish\, and Bangla – recipes for the seasonal produce we all share. The event is a community builder\, with a potluck and a recipe share. It will take place in a neighborhood backyard. DESCRIPTION:About Shared Dialogue\, Shared Space (SDSS) \nThis flagship initiative of the Korea Art Forum proudly commissions artists to create a series of socially engaged\, participatory art that culminates in public art installations in outdoor community hubs. The project focuses on serving (im)migrants\, people with disabilities\, and individuals facing economic hardship. Since its launch in 2020\, SDSS has integrated art into daily city life\, fostering dialogue between artists and the public while addressing various issues\, such as anti-Asian sentiment\, inequality\, and climate justice. SDSS promotes collaboration\, resilience\, and social change\, offering free\, accessible\, and immersive art events with live interpretation services. SDSS connects local communities to art\, which enhances their overall quality of life and well-being. \nAbout Korea Art Forum (KAF) \nFounded in New York City in 2013\, KAF is led by artists\, scholars\, and peacemakers committed to bridging the world through art. KAF supports artists’ social engagement\, enhancing people’s quality of life and well-being. DESCRIPTION:A Senior Adult Art Exhibition in Queens Public Library\, Flushing\, organized by ChrisTina Andersen (SPCUNY Fellow) and Kilusan Bautista (SPCUNY Fellow Alumni) QPL Director of Cultural Outreach. \nMemories: Souvenirs of Life showcases artwork by adults aged 65 to 90 created in oil painting classes taught by ChrisTina Andersen\, a Social Practice CUNY Fellow\, at senior centers in Queens. \nEach artist has painted a meaningful memory\, accompanied by a brief written reflection. Most are immigrants\, primarily from China\, Hong Kong as well as Puerto Rico\, Greece\, Taiwan\, Thailand\, Vietnam\, Indonesia\, Poland\, Israel and Brazil. DESCRIPTION:@CPR DOUBLE FEATURE\nUnder the Hood: Fiducial Romance by geo blake\nBlue Lightning Ghost Train: Inpatient Program 1 by Kerosene Jones\nCPR – Center for Performance Research\nSaturday\, May 10 at 7:00 PM\nTickets $0-$25\, pay what you can. \nJoin us Saturday\, May 10 for a double feature of new performance works by geo blake and Kerosene Jones presented at CPR – Center for Performance Research\, for the artists’ MFA thesis projects in the Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) Program at Brooklyn College. Proceeds go to Bluestockings Cooperative\, who will be providing Fentanyl and Xylazine testing strips on-site to attendees. \nThrough an interplay of live performance and mediated fragments\, Under the Hood: Fiducial Romance\, by geo blake featuring Alanna Archibald\, examines the intimacy embedded in economies of care\, trust\, and extraction. Merging movement\, voice\, transducers\, and projected imagery\, and drawing from the iconography of the automobile as both a site of fetishization and labor\, Under the Hood engages with themes of objectification\, autonomy\, and the blurred lines between maintenance and possession. \nBlue Lightning Ghost Train: Inpatient Program 1 by Kerosene Jones is the first phase of an experimental song\, video\, and performance cycle using archival materials to explore queer responses to harm reduction\, particularly in regards to the ongoing opioid crisis\, and drawing from Jones’s personal experiences with opioid addiction. The development of the Blue Lightning Ghost Train series has received support from New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA)\, and a CUNY Social Practice Fellowship\, and features mix engineering by Bassel Al-Rahim. \nTickets can be purchased here!

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 1st\, 2025 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm\, the Queens Public Library at Flushing will kick off Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a special paneled book talk on “Corky Lee’s Asian America: 50 years of Photographic Justice.” Moderated by the Jiefei Faye Yuan\, Curator of the Queens Memory Project\, this panel will include Chee Wang Ng (Co-Editor) and Virgo Lee (Member of the Estate of Corky Lee). We are honored to have opening remarks/reflections by New York Assembly Member Ron Kim and New York City Human Rights Commissioner Rocky Chin. \nJoin us for a dynamic community gathering to explore the concept of photographic justice through the late Corky Lee’s work. The panel has curated a slide show presentation\, coupled with an opportunity for guest’s questions and answers. We will be welcoming our community co-sponsors to table and share resource information in the spirit of Corky Lee’s activist roots. DESCRIPTION:A participatory assembly led by SPCUNY Fellow and Artist Chloe Smolarski; Tasha Darbes\, ethnographer; and Edge Effect Media Group. \nRemember: the planet is an archive. On April 24th\, join together with people of different experiences as we engage the climate crisis through art\, embodiment\, and conversation. Participants will interact with archival material as interlocutors\, as they observe one another’s stories of climate change effects. \nThis assembly will contribute oral histories to an archive of collective grief\, as we recover the past\, acknowledge the present\, and dream about the future of our climate. Embedded within and inspired by the exhibits “Holding Water” and “When Home Leaves You: Archiving Living Memories of Climate Change\,” our space centers collective grief\, as a way to transcend alienation and imagine responses. \n

DESCRIPTION:SPCUNY Fellow E. Adamo’s MFA thesis exhibition at Queens College on the 4th Floor of Klapper Hall will be open to the public from 4/22 to 4/25\, with the opening reception April 22 from 6pm to 8pm. There will be a group crit at 5:30pm\, also open to the public\, and refreshments all night long. The exhibition will be an immersive environment meant to be experienced firsthand and in-person\, so your presence is greatly appreciated! The work is a culmination of Adamo’s ideas and projects since they began their program at Queens College in 2023\, as well as their SPCUNY project surrounding community gambling and it’s potential to challenge market-based systems. Artworks at the exhibition could\, hypothetically\, be available via raffle.

SUMMARY:OUR STUDIES SHOW Session 8
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE session \nFREE/NON-MONETARY \n\nLead by SPCUNY alumni Esther Neff of PPL\, OUR STUDIES SHOW stages collective philosophy as a form of theatre. It is a play about/of/at thinking. Considering our inhabitation of our own body-minds as legitimate empirical study (e.g. “instances of human being/thinking”) and our intuitions\, experiences\, and ideas as important philosophical contributions\, we practice complex thought together through a series of in-person gatherings. We (those assembled) dig deeply into metaphysical and conceptual problems. Everyone is welcome. No assumed “knowledge\,” or intellectual “background” needed. The primary task here is simply to compose and perform complex inquiries together. This is not a reading group\, it is (a) “play.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThrough the first three sessions in Fall of 2024\, collective bodies composed the form of an inquiry: \n1) how are “human beings” related to “nature”?\n2) how does what actual embodied persons believe about this question “matter”?\n3) How shall we evaluate “beliefs” on grounds other than whether or not they are “true” or “scientific”?\n\nSpring 2025 sessions will involve “theoretical dramaturgies” (scores for thinking and theorizing together) which re-phrase\, re-frame\, and re-iterate such inquiries\, particularly in relation to “biological” vs. “cultural”  senses of sex and gender\, de-alienation and “settler surrender\,” and the role of doxastic logics (belief systems) in collective self-recognition. \nMasks are required for the in-person session.
