SUMMARY:Picturing the Constitution: Penumbra
DESCRIPTION:Opening: Sunday\, October 22\, 4-6pm\nOpen hours: Friday-Sunday 12-4pm or by appointment \nPenumbra (def. A partial shadow\, as in an eclipse\, between regions of complete shadow and complete illumination) is a project and installation that challenges the constitutionality of Dobbs v. Jackson\, a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court\, June 24\, 2022\, in which the Court held that the U.S. Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Historically however\, Justices and Scholars have argued that the founding document includes a penumbra: a group of rights implied from other explicitly protected rights. The term gained attention in 1965\, when the Griswold v. Connecticut decision established a right to privacy based on the 1791 Bill of Rights and explicitly the First\, Fourth\, Fifth & Ninth Amendments\, in addition to substantive due process rights of the 14th Amendment. Penumbra seeks to expand upon work completed by the art collective: how to perform an abortion. \nWhen the Dobbs decision calls attention to the phrase ‘(not) deeply rooted in our history and tradition’ to explain why abortion was not a right granted in the Constitution\, we ask ‘whose history….whose tradition?’ The answer is abortion history is women’s history as we draw attention to the millennia-long legacy of women using herbs for abortion and contraception\, a ‘birthright’ that is part of a deeply hidden\, repressed\, and often destroyed global practice. Here we juxtapose selections from Dobbs\, placed on a background of images of groups of ‘men making serious decisions’ in relation to selections from Roe\, placed on a background of women taking care of other women\, all against a background of herbs used for abortion and contraception. \n  \nCOVID-19 Policies:\nBecause of the interactive nature of our exhibit\, face masks are required for all visitors over age 2 at all times during your visit to the Old Stone House. If you do not have a mask\, OSH will provide one. All OSH staff members are fully vaccinated.

SUMMARY:LESSONS FOR SURVIVAL Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Fiction welcomes back American Book Award-winning author Emily Raboteau (The Professor’s Daughter\, Searching for Zion) to discuss her new highly-anticipated collection of essays\, Lessons of Survival: Mothering Against “the Apocalypse.” In this powerful work that is “as layered and magnificent as essayistic-writing gets” (Kiese Laymon\, author of Heavy)\, Raboteau reflects on the intersectional fights for environmental and racial justice through the lens of motherhood. Her book is a moving exploration of what it takes to raise children to thrive in a world of inequities\, without coming undone. Raboteau is joined by essayist Garnette Cadogan for a rich conversation on her work\, in which she will also share some photographs from the book. \nCo-sponsored by Orion Magazine and the Climate Museum. \nAfter the conversation\, Raboteau will sign books.

SUMMARY:Gardening Angel: opening and walkthrough
DESCRIPTION:“Gardening Angel” is a site-specific sculpture designed for installation in Jackie Robinson Park\, representing growth and community prosperity. Standing approximately 58” tall\, it features a black with iridescent bronze glaze ceramic figure\, emphasizing positive change. Crafted with paper clay and stoneware\, supported by a concealed metal armature\, the sculpture depicts a life-sized figure with a waist-high opening serving as a vessel. The nuanced multi-toned bronze glazing process symbolizes resilience and growth\, while vibrant blue hydrangeas planted around the sculpture represent gratitude for a flourishing community. To engage visitors\, activities such as balloon flower performances will extend the sculpture’s message of growth\, prosperity\, and unity. \nOn May 2nd\, the official walkthrough will start at noon in Morningside Park with artist Coby Kennedy and Deputy Borough President Keisha Sutton-James. \nSPCUNY Artist: V (vera) Tineo\, 2023–24 Student Fellow \nWith support from: Harlem Sculpture Gardens\, Savona Bailey-McClain (Executive Director & Chief Curator) West Harlem Art Fund\, Queens College Ceramic Department\, NY Artist Equity Association and AHL Foundation
