SUMMARY:Picturing the Constitution: Penumbra
DESCRIPTION:Opening: Sunday\, October 22\, 4-6pm\nOpen hours: Friday-Sunday 12-4pm or by appointment \nPenumbra (def. A partial shadow\, as in an eclipse\, between regions of complete shadow and complete illumination) is a project and installation that challenges the constitutionality of Dobbs v. Jackson\, a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court\, June 24\, 2022\, in which the Court held that the U.S. Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Historically however\, Justices and Scholars have argued that the founding document includes a penumbra: a group of rights implied from other explicitly protected rights. The term gained attention in 1965\, when the Griswold v. Connecticut decision established a right to privacy based on the 1791 Bill of Rights and explicitly the First\, Fourth\, Fifth & Ninth Amendments\, in addition to substantive due process rights of the 14th Amendment. Penumbra seeks to expand upon work completed by the art collective: how to perform an abortion. \nWhen the Dobbs decision calls attention to the phrase ‘(not) deeply rooted in our history and tradition’ to explain why abortion was not a right granted in the Constitution\, we ask ‘whose history….whose tradition?’ The answer is abortion history is women’s history as we draw attention to the millennia-long legacy of women using herbs for abortion and contraception\, a ‘birthright’ that is part of a deeply hidden\, repressed\, and often destroyed global practice. Here we juxtapose selections from Dobbs\, placed on a background of images of groups of ‘men making serious decisions’ in relation to selections from Roe\, placed on a background of women taking care of other women\, all against a background of herbs used for abortion and contraception. \n  \nCOVID-19 Policies:\nBecause of the interactive nature of our exhibit\, face masks are required for all visitors over age 2 at all times during your visit to the Old Stone House. If you do not have a mask\, OSH will provide one. All OSH staff members are fully vaccinated.

SUMMARY:A ProtoScore
DESCRIPTION:At the National Museum of Kenya\, Ford Hall \nA ProtoScore is a durational gathering of artists\, scientists and members of the public in Nairobi. \nThis is a mutually generative and creative process that fosters curiosity and connection. It is an experiment for scientists and artists to explore collaborations. It builds relational connections between artists and scientists through a non-hierarchical form of conversation\, where each person in the conversation has an equal voice. The conversation format was created together in Kenya between artists; James Muriuki\, Floor\, Jepkorir Rose and scientists; Hussein Abkallo\, Kelly Nakami and Peterkin Munywoki. \n  \nBiographies \nHussein Abkallo is a Biomedical Scientist working on broader applications of CRISPR/Cas technology and Synthetic biology in developing vaccines and establishing ultra-sensitive diagnostics. \nFloor Grootenhuis is a contemporary artist based in NY. Her performative practice is focused on invitation\, connection\, and identity.  \nPeterkin Munywoki is a Veterinary surgeon. He holds a BVM (2021) and an MSc in Veterinary Theriogenology (2023)\, both from the University of Nairobi. He is currently consulting for Zoetis Belgium SA\, a multinational pharmaceutical company. \nJames Muriuki\, is an artist who has primarily utilized lens-based media in his work. His practice revolves around the transition of society and the development of rapidly evolving urban spaces. \nJepkorir Rose is a curator working alongside artists and affiliating practices to create opportunities and spaces to encounter each other in areas of interest. \nNakami Wilkister is a vet/reproductive technology specialist in livestock reproduction\, genome editing\, veterinary science\, and stem cell culture. She also lectures at the University of Nairobi. \n  \nThis collaboration has been made possible by the support of Social Practice CUNY\, The Dr. Jayne Raper Lab at Hunter College New York\, Steve Kemp at ILRI\, and C& art space in Nairobi\, Kenya.
